TV PPV’s

PPV’s on TV

Lately, TNA has done PPV’s on TV; and that surmises their Impact primetime airing on Thursday nights. On the other hand, WWE has still kept their 12- per monthly PPV’s; albeit with some name and concept changes. However, both PPV’s are bound to show off the best matches, and culminations of big feuds. Would WWE, even for a ratings spike; or a one-time only special ever do a TV PPV? If so, it gives the fans the feeling or belief that something “special” is being done, and is can’t-miss.

With the new network and offering all WWE PPV’s, how much IS too much? Is there a point of where it becomes overkill, or “waters down” your product? PPV’s from WWE are made through the Network upon the subscription/fee is now $9.99. TNA has done “one night only” specials; and has cut back on PPV airings, except Bound for Glory. The point I’m making is: Is this a newer, better way to grow your PPV business? Can this “new way” to broadcast PPV’s still make a plentiful profit?

TNA has done the correct “short term” fix to realizing that the PPV market is on the decline. Impact offers a 2 hour PPV special (when listed) with good matches, and made to emphasize the in-ring product. I think it helps because it makes Bound For Glory have that “Super bowl” or Wrestlemania feeling because you have to pay to see THIS one, the BIG PPV offered by TNA.

WWE on the other hand gives better access, and availability because of their Network, while still keeping the PPV rubric still in place. They have not compromised or gone to PPV on TV mantra like TNA has done. Both companies also broadcast via their websites, an online stream for their PPV. WWE had 24-7, and now is WWE Network. ImpactOnDemand is similar, and should continue to add more programming and content hours to find their PPV’s; past and upcoming. Both companies also have gone Social Media with the Twitter, Tout, Instagram and YouTube videos; as Impact has Impact24/7 of all other happenings besides what’s in-ring. WWE has continued with their campaigns such as new WWE network shows, and also the YouTube online shows such as: R U Serious, Backstage Fallout and the like. Maybe TNA needs to create an app; a la WWE; and broadcast their matches, segments and interviews like WWE has done. Just a thought…

There are some differences and similarities to how WWE and TNA have adapted their PPV and PPV market for success. The one other factor, which also broadcasts Indy Wrestling and online streams, is World Wrestling Network, run by Gabe Sapolsky. With all these changes and permutations to both TNA and WWE; how will this impact the World Wrestling Network? Would TNA also find an avenue, plus more revenue in broadcasting with WWN?

In closing, in my personal opinion- the World Wrestling Network is a great way to broadcast and promote your PPV; and should be looked at as a viable, cutting edge option. I believe in the near future, you will see more promotions being added; and even compliment Dragon Gate and Evolve on the WWN.
