Undertaker's Retirement, Done Right? You Decide.

With rumors circulating that the Undertaker may be retiring in the next year, I can’t help but think of the obvious reality that is upon us…our time watching the Dead Man is getting shorter by the day.

So with that said, WWE is in for one tough job in the writing department when it comes to getting his retirement perfected on paper, or are they? One thing I’m sure of is his retirement can’t be an emotional send-off similar to Flair’s, or Stone Cold’s formal goodbye, both of which were respectably memorable and appropriate. THIS IS THE UNDERTAKER! His character requires something different. His mysterious debut, which left us wanting more and more of this strange, different character, should meet full circle with the culmination of his career. One can only assume his final match would HAVE to be at Wrestlemania.

Keep in mind this is how I would do it, and most likely the exact inverse of what we’ll see on WWE television in the next year. He’ll probably retire at a poorly booked/promoted ‘No Mercy’ PPV. No, I take that back…I’m not giving WWE enough credit when it comes to honoring the legends of this business. Like I said earlier, I wouldn’t change a thing about how Flair or Austin were honored. And no, I’m not pouting in my bowl of chocolate milk about Austin not facing Hogan. The Rock, I’m sorry, DWAYNE did it and could have been better. Austin didn’t want to do it, leave it alone. But I just have a huge gut feeling that they’re going to screw this one up, big time. Not only is he going to have a hard time out-performing his epic match from Wrestlemania 25, but if he does, we can’t just see him walk up the ramp for the last time, possibly teary-eyed, and give one last raised fist. That shows no imagination.

So I’m going to give this a shot. The last time the Undertaker held the WWE Championship was July 21st, 2002. Personally, I’d like to see him rock that bad boy one more time, so strap into your imagination chair, and launch yourself to Wrestlemania 26.

The main event has reached its climax, and the Undertaker tombstones his opponent (doesn’t matter who it is, because he’ll lose), and the crowd goes crazy. Taker gets the three-count. J.R. screams, “Undertaker’s the champion! Undertaker’s the champion!”

Here’s where it gets interesting. I’ll either get eaten alive for even suggesting this, or praised and rewarded with a wicked-cool nickname, like the Rabid Wolverine of the columns. Bad example…

He gets down to a knee and raises his title for the last time. The thunder roars loudly and one final clap ends in blackness. A few seconds of nothing pass. The lights fade back in. The Undertaker is nowhere to be seen. The WWE championship lies in the center of the ring. He becomes the first Superstar to ever retire with the championship. If there was one superstar to ever do it, it’s him. I'm not saying the title would disappear forever. Of course there would be some big questions as to who the number one contender would be after the fact, but that's beside the point. It would be sweet to see Vince on a red canvas again, with the title belt in a display case, perhaps granting an unexpected star first dibs. Maybe Mr. Money in the Bank will drop in. The possibilities are endless.

It makes me sad, because I know it will never happen.

Bring on the noise! Change some stuff around, add your own twist, or go nuts and change the whole damn thing! I’ll be waiting.

Cheers, Miguel.
