 Cena vs. Orton.........AGAIN???!!!

Just a quick article….(more of a personal venting than anything constructive)

Would you call the feud between Randy Orton and John Cena “Epic”? When you think of the last few WWE Pay per View’s headlined by Cena vs. Orton, would you reference those matches as “awesome”? When you think of “The Rivalry” in WWE, does Orton vs. Cena jump to mind?

I don’t, and I’m done paying to see the same match month-in and month-out.

I guess you can trace the root of this current feud to the “Night of Champions” June pay per view, that is the first time in 2009 the two were involved in a Pay Per View match (of course add 1 dose of a stale HHH into the mix too for the three way dance…can’t leave Hunter out of too many title matches??) Orton pins Cena with the RKO.

Orton 1 – Cena 0

Which takes us to SummerSlam (or is that SummerFest Dr. Ken?) where Cena vs. Orton once again plays out as one of the main events. Cena does the whole “beat the clock” thing on RAW to become Orton’s challenger….again (and people laughed at me when I was hoping The Miz would win). This was the goofy little SummerSlam match that kept ending via DQ, or Count-out or feet on the ropes during a pin, and Lillian had to keep announcing Mr. McMahon was re-starting the match. Then you get a run-in by Brett DiBiase (Legacy had that match with DX earlier…so they couldn’t help Orton), then Orton hits the RKO and pins Cena…again.

Orton 2 – Cena 0

Vince himself set up the next rematch between the two at “Breaking Point”, adding that the match would be an “I Quit” match. And because Legacy was such a “threat” (ha ha) if anyone interfered on Orton’s behalf he would lose the title. Orton “quits” after 20 minutes and Cena becomes your new WWE Champ.

Orton 2 – Cena 1

This takes us to this past Sunday and “Hell in a Cell”, (remember when Hell in a Cell really meant something? Stuff like blood, weapons, and um…wrestlers actually using the structure itself to win a match?). This was actually a decent match, while not a strong “Hell in a Cell” match, a good solid main event nonetheless. Still, it was Orton vs. Cena…again! Orton recaptures the title.

Orton 3 – Cena 1

This sets us up for “Bragging Rights”, where it was announced last night that it would be Cena vs. Orton in a 60 minute “Iron Man” match. Cena did his best to build this 5th meeting as “epic”, and “awesome”, claiming that Cena vs. Orton was “The Rivalry” in WWE…..sorry pal, I’m not buyin’ it. I am sick of this feud. For half of 2009 the “WWE Universe” has been stuck watching this rehashed match over and over again! And to top it off, Cena vs. Orton are not only going to face each other “once” more….but they have been allotted 1/3rd of the pay per view in order to out-stale each other?!?! Give DX a twenty minute chunk, and if Undertaker make his way to the ring to defend his title, that’s another 20 minutes, throw a Diva thing in there, and they have to work an ECW title shot in there somewhere as well, maybe a quick match with The Miz defending his new title, and boom, there is the card.

WEAK! And definitely not worth $40. And the scary thing is, I’m not sure this will be the end of the feud!! Its possible WWE could carry this thing along for another month or two! If Cena wins at “Bragging Rights”, then of course Orton will have his re-match clause to invoke. That spinner title could be going back and forth between these two the rest of the year!!!!!

I’ve seen plenty of articles calling for WWE to lessen the number of Pay per Views the put on every year. That might be a good thing, but I don’t see that happening. Even when WCW was dying its painful death, they still managed a monthly pay per view, so for whatever reason, Pay per Views seem to be ingrained in the pro wrestling business manual.

My only advice to WWE is to keep the Pay per View’s fresh. If you are asking your fans to drop an extra $40 a month, especially during football season, and during this economy, then you better pack the card with something new. Pitting Cena vs. Orton for the 5th straight month is just plain lazy booking. I don’t even think I would want to watch this on free TV, much less pay for the damn thing.
