By XXX Jerichol Welcome to my review of a WWF classic video game and without a doubt the best wrestling has ever produced, WWF No Mercy. If your a wrestling fan who has the money to shell out 75 bucks for a Nintendo 64 and a copy of No Mercy then I would defiantly recommend this game for you. Or if that's not available then you can go to your local "dealer" and get the N64, WWF No Mercy, WWF Wrestlemania 2000, Resident Evil 2, and a memory card and get it all for the low price of 50 dollars, much like I did. Quite simply even the smart's will love this game, it has everything. Respectable graphics, an excellent career mode, and a CAW that could make you crap your pants!. So if you aren't already rushing out the door to buy this game by now then you might as well hear the praise that I'm going to give it. The career mode on this thing is absolutely astonishing. An even the fact that you have to wrestle a lot of handicap matches which makes you want to put your fist through the goddamn screen doesn't tarnish the fact that this is the best career mode of any wrestling game, EVER. I know your sitting at home and saying "but XXX Jericho, that isn't saying much" and you'd be correct. Smackdown JBI's career mode would've been decent if it didn't take you fifteen minutes to complete it and Smackdown Know Your Role's would've been better if it hadn't had so many random, repetitive storylines, I mean how many of you actually yelled out in excitement "OH MY GOD!, TAKA MICHONOKU JUST SHOWED UP AT THE ARENA!, MY LIFE HAS BEEN MEANINGLESS SINCE THIS!", I thought so. Well No Mercy offers storylines which revolves around your wrestler and who he gets into a feud with. For example, I was wrestling with my created guy (Abraham the Amish Assassin) in the European title career mode, I beat Eddie Guerrero in my first match for the European title so the following weeks he and his buddies ambush me and then the bastard steals my title. So I jump his buddy's in the back and a couple losses in handicap matches later and the games over. Never mind that its sort of difficult, this is what wrestling fans have been waiting for ever since "WWF Warzone" and they got it now. Now onto the game play and graphics. The graphics are excellent for Nintendo 64 which makes playing the game much more enjoyable. The controlling is by far the easiest ever for any wrestling game. This is probably the only game were you put someone through a table and they don't fall off in mid-move making the thing looked fucked up. And you say your tired of having to beat the living shit out of your opponent just to nail your finisher once?, well in No Mercy you just beat them up till your momentum meter goes up and when it says special you can hit them as many times as you can with your finisher in the 20 to 25 seconds your allowed. But No Mercy isn't without its flaws either, the facial features can be really bad (Triple H looks like he suffered some really bad burns when he was a kid) and everyone, even Taka Michonoku looks their on juice. If you can ignore these flaws then more power to you, but I'm having nightmares about HHH's face. The sound on this game is pretty good and can make you wince and almost feel someone's bones breaking. Like once I had HHH in the Liontamer and when he tapped out the sound coming from his body made me weak in the knees. But the game also has flaws in this area too. The entrance music sounds extremely boxed in and there's no commentary. Now if you played Smackdown JBI then you would think that's not a bad thing, but it really takes away from the game. Now onto what can make or break a game, the extras. I'm talking about CAW, match options and some other stuff. The CAW in this game is average and could use some improvement but in some strange way it seems better then the other games. What its lacking in match options it makes up for in match quality. You can have your fancy Hell In A Cell match on Smackdown JBI where you run on top and fall through the hole WITHOUT BEING HURT!, THAT GUY MUST HAVE LEGS OF STEEL!. I'll take the No Mercy Ladder match over that any day, because not only is it not choppy but it actually looks realistic, THERES A CONCEPT. Take Smackdown JBI for example, your on the ladder, your opponent kicks it, the ladder flops to the ground in an anticlimactic fashion and so do you, but in No Mercy it takes more then a kick to knock it down and when they finally do knock it down it slowly tumbles over with you on it and you hit the ground with a satisfying THUMP and a good bounce. Then that bastard HHH goes up the ladder while your Chris Jericho, lying on the ground because THE GAME DOESN'T JOB TO MIDCARDERS!. Another interesting feature is Smackdown mall. Where you can add cool moves to an already packed move arsenal, or you could buy some new clothes or unlock some hidden characters, the choices are endless on No Mercy. Overall, this is the best wrestling game EVER. With Wrestlemania 2000 coming in at second. The THQ engine produces great wrestling and I'm looking forward to renting a Gamecube and playing Wrestlemania X-8 for the first time. If your a wrestling fan sick of all these mediocre games and companies refusing to listen to what the fan wants I would buy this game and enjoy it as much as it can because it might be the last of the good wrestling games, until Smackdown 4 comes out, which I heard is looking good. Overall: 9.5 Gameplay: 9.5 Graphics: 9.0 Sound: 7.5 Extras: 9.5 (Would've given it a ten if it had a little bit more variety in match types.) Recommendation: If you own a 64 its a must buy!. Hell, even if you don’t have the 64, buy it!, the games that good!. |
